I’m Eli Adams, and I’m an absolute lover of all things outdoors, but my entrance into the wild was "goofy and clumsy". As a first-generation American, I grew up with the fear that "bad people lived in the woods"—a barrier that kept me from exploring for years. I founded Lost Terrain Tours to help you skip the intimidation and dive straight into the beauty of nature without the steep learning curve or high gear costs.

What is Lost Terrain Tours?

Lost Terrain Tours is a curated hub of hand-picked outdoor experiences led by expert local guides and small guiding companies. Unlike "big box" sites, we partner directly with professionals like Trish Schales and Brooks Coker to connect you with high-quality Multi-Day Adventures and half day hiking tours & adventures. We focus on showing you the spots our guides love to explore themselves.

Why does Lost Terrain focus on beginners?

We focus on beginners to remove the high barriers of cost and information that often keep people indoors. I remember not having $280 for a technical puffer jacket when I started. Our guiding partners, like Trish, know how discouraging it is to feel judged when trying something new, so we have built a culture of patience and respect where no one is talked down to.

You don't need top-of-the-line gear to begin; a Jansport and beat-up sneakers are enough to get you to the trail.

How do I prepare for my first trip?

The best way to prepare is to join a skills-based course where technical gear is provided so you can "try before you buy." For our Adventures in the Pacific Northwest, which provide almost everything except personal clothing—including backpacks, tents, and bear canisters. You will learn practical skills like how to pack a pack for comfort and how to use trekking poles effectively.

Where can I find the best beginner trails?

  • Adventures in the Pacific Northwest: Explore the volcanic landscapes of Mount St. Helens or the "Land of Waterfalls" in the Columbia River Gorge.

  • Hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains: Discover the incredible biodiversity near Asheville, NC, where you can hike through lush, "mossy paradise" forests and reach 6,000-foot elevations with views into multiple states.

Ready to Book an Adventure?

Making plans to visit Asheville, NC? Don't spend too much time finding trails off the beaten path and explore epic trips that show you why they call parts of these mountains the "Land of Waterfalls".

What should I expect on a guided tour?

Expect a "walk-in classroom" experience where safety is the priority and the pace is gentler. Guides are Wilderness First Responders who handle all risk assessments and planning. Beyond the physical hike, expect surprises—like flying a kite at the top of a mountain or eating a cupcake to celebrate reaching a view. You’ll learn how to set up camp, filter water, and navigate with a map and compass.

What is the difference between Half Day Hiking Tours & Adventures and Multi-Day Adventures?

The primary difference is the level of immersion: Half-day tours focus on specific sights like waterfalls or wildflowers, while Multi-Day Adventures teach you how to live comfortably in the backcountry.

  • Half Day Hiking Tours & Adventures: These are typically 4–5 hour interpretive hikes and experiences that offer deep dives into local flora, fauna, and history.

  • Multi-Day Adventures: These are immersive overnight treks where you carry your "home" on your back, learn to cook in the wild, and experience the peace of being out of cell service.

FAQ:

Are guided hikes expensive? While technical gear is costly, our guided trips often include rentals (tents, packs, stoves) which saves you from investing over $1,000 upfront just to "try" the sport.

Do I need hiking experience? No. We specialize in welcoming people who have never spent a night in a tent or worn a professional backpack. Most trips are labeled as such!

What if I am traveling alone? We offer specific Solo Traveler trips designed to connect you with a community on the trail.

Are guided hikes safe? Yes. Most guides have "escape routes" and carry satellite communication and paper maps as backups for safety.

Can beginners join? Absolutely. Most of our programs, especially our "Intro to Backpacking" courses, are designed specifically for the "beginner’s mindset"
