When you step onto a trail in Western North Carolina, you are walking through one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. But keeping these spaces wild takes more than just good intentions.
At Lost Terrain Tours, we believe the outdoor industry must "spread the wealth" to the people doing the heavy lifting. We donate a portion of every Asheville-Based Hiking Club ticket to three key non-profits that keep our backyard healthy.
Who is the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC)?
The SAHC is a powerhouse for land protection. They focus on saving unique plant and animal habitats, clean water sources, and scenic beauty across North Carolina and Tennessee.
By protecting massive tracts of land, like the recent 1,060-acre transfer to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, they ensure that wildlife corridors stay open. Your participation helps fund these permanent land easements.
What Does RiverLink Do for the French Broad?
RiverLink is the voice of our central waterway. They work to promote the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its entire watershed.
They turn old industrial sites into public parks and greenways and their work on "green infrastructure" helps the city manage stormwater and reduces the risk of flooding in our communities.
Why is the Mills River Partnership Unique?
The Mills River is a primary drinking water source for over 100,000 people in Western North Carolina. The Mills River Partnership works directly with landowners to stop erosion and runoff.
They are currently restoring 950 linear feet of the Brandy Branch tributary. This work keeps the water clear and cold, which is essential for the health of our local trout and the safety of our tap water.
Is the Asheville Hiking Club Part of This?
Yes. Every time you join our Group Hikes near Asheville, NC, you are contributing to these specific missions. We don't just hike for the views; we hike to fund the future of the forest.
We also offer dog-friendly hikes near Asheville, NC that follow strict guidelines to respect these protected lands. This ensures that our pets can enjoy nature without disrupting the sensitive ecosystems SAHC and RiverLink work to save.
Why Do We Partner With Other Guide Services?
Our collaboration is Led by a local guide from Blue Ridge Hiking Co. to maintain the highest standard of trail education. This partnership is vital for sharing resources and permits fairly.
By working together, we ensure that no single group overuses the trails. It’s all about creating a sustainable community where there are plenty of outdoor things to do in Asheville, NC for generations to come.
